On the shores of Lake Erie, Cleveland has been at the heart of invention since the industrial revolution, leading up to the foundation of the National Aeronautics & Space Administration Laboratory. Today, Cleveland is one of the growing tech hubs in America with 50,000 employees, according to NuCamp. In 2023, IBM and the Cleveland Clinic announced they would use a quantum computer for healthcare research. From cutting edge web development and tech incubators to computer science at Case Western University, SHARE members will arrive on the ground at SHARE Cleveland (Aug. 17-21) ready to soak in the success stories and technical education they need to grow their mainframe careers.
History and Culture Are Everywhere
Start the week off right with a seat at a Cleveland Guardians’ home game on Aug. 17. Or absorb the knowledge from the conference in a relaxed environment by visiting these places of tranquility:
Check out more of Cleveland’s history at the USS COD Submarine Memorial with its active Mark IV Torpedo Data Computer. The U.S. Navy invented it to automate torpedo intercept courses. The city is also home to film and music history at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame or the Christmas Story house made famous by the 1983 film.
Get some inspiration at the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, or from the Terminal Tower Observation Deck. The newly renovated observation deck harkens back to its 1930s glory, and SHARE members can get a bird’s eye view of the entire city, including the Cleveland Public Square. Built during the skyscraper boom of the 1920s and 1930s, the Terminal Tower is 52 stories, and visitors can take in the 360-degree views of Lake Erie. Extend your stay and enjoy the Cleveland Metro Parks Zoo and the Greater Cleveland Aquarium.
Feed Your Mind With Local Favorites
Looking for family-owned businesses and great food? Check out Cleveland’s West Side Market, which has continuously served residents and tourists since 1912. Find a wide range of fresh-baked goods, meats, produce, and prepared foods. While there, check out the Pierogi Palace for traditional Polish fare and unique pierogi combinations, including the Reuben. The market is also easily accessible by public transit.
If you’re in the mood for a seafood dinner with a full bar and wine list that serves award-winning Spanish and Portuguese cuisine, including Gazpacho, paella, and mar y tierra (steak and lobster tail), check out Mallorca. Pop over to Cordelia to grab heritage-rich recipes that include Midwest favorites like corned lamb, pork belly, and fried chicken.
The Bourbon Street Barrel Room provides a casual place for conversation and New Orleans cuisine of jambalaya, crawfish, and gumbo. Don’t forget to order the beignets or one of the 30+ craft beers available. Town Hall allows you to build your own bowls, grab a soup, or select from pub favorites like potato skins, truffle fries, and chicken wings or healthier fare, including organic veggie bites and poke bowls.
