IBM, in partnership with the David Clark Cause, United Nations Human Rights Office, American Red Cross, the Linux Foundation and AngelHack, launched the Call for Code at the VivaTech Conference in Paris, in May 2018. This is a global initiative focusing on detection, response, and recovery from natural disasters. Developers are being asked to enter the competition, a first of its kind at this scale, to use their skills to create solutions that improve preparedness for natural disasters and relief.
Over the next five years, IBM will commit $30 million worth of technology to this cause. This will include developer access and training for IBM’s data, AI, the blockchain, cloud including the new Hyper Protect Services, IoT tools, etc.
The winning team will be rewarded a $200,000 prize, support from IBM and the Linux Foundation to make the prototype a reality, introduction to venture capitalists, the to join one of IBM’s Corporate Service Corps team—all while using technology for a worthy cause.
- Developers can register today here as individuals and submit an application later as part of a team of up to five members.
- Projects can be entered between June 18, 2018, and August 31, 2018.
- Thirty semi-finalists will be selected in September.
- Winners will be announced at the Call for Code Global Prize Event and Concert, coordinated by the David Clark Cause which will benefit UN Human Rights and the American Red Cross, and be held on October 13th, the United Nations International Day for Disaster Reduction.
- Call for Code participants will use the technology available through IBM Cloud along with open source IBM Code Patterns and Starter Kits – curated reusable packages of documentation, architecture diagrams, process flows, and access to the underlying code on GitHub – to innovate and build their submissions.
