Greetings friends!
With all the nostalgia-laden posts I've been doing lately, you'd think I was on the verge of retirement or checking out. Sadly, the first is not happening yet and hopefully the second won't either. I can't really articulate a reason for my pensive and wistful blog entries. I'm open to suggestions though.
Here's my list of Top Ten Things I Miss, as it relates to MVS systems programming, of course.
10 The password dataset
9 Following faqe chains
8 Stepcat/jobcat
7 IPO1 datasets. And IPOUPDTE
6 Reading dumps over the phone to IBM
5 Having only RMFMON instead of eight different monitors
4 Calling it clip versus initialize
3 Zapping the format4 dscb
2 IPS and ICS
And the number one MVS Systems Programming thing I miss:
1 MVSCP
No, I'm not going to explain my reasons for each one...just the top...three, no four.
Clip. I still call it clip. Clip a pack. It just has such a nice ring to it.
Zap. I used to have to do this a lot, when somehow we'd get uncatalogued vsam files.
IPS and ICS. With all due respect to WLM, I miss the simple, one screen (usually) IPS.
MVSCP. Again, with all due respect to HCD, I really miss MVSCP's. In fact I still create an IOCP input dataset in HCD so I can take a look at it in a top-down fashion and make sure what I wanted to happen, happened.
There were others on the list...programmable keys, isfparms, the TSO console command. But these were the Top Ten. Thanks for taking the trip down memory lane with me!
Until Next Time....
