Football fans across the country know the Kansas City Chiefs even without the connection to Taylor Swift. But Kansas City, or the City of Fountains with its 200 registered fountains, is one of the two recently designated tech hubs by the U.S. Economic Development Administration. SHARE is eager to bring even more technology to the region Aug. 4-8 with its summer event near the city’s Power & Light District, which is chock full of entertainment and food.
Linger Over a Meal and Share Your Knowledge
Need a quick breakfast? Meshuggah Bagels is the place for the five-ingredient bagel and the schmears — otherwise known as house-made cream cheese — that will have you thinking you’ve landed in a Jewish deli in New York. Don’t forget the lox. If you just need a strong espresso, hop over to PT’s Coffee.
Why head out to Chipotle when you can get to know Kansas City through the food at County Road Ice House and pair an ice cold beer with smoked ribs, pulled pork, or beef brisket. Add a side of spicy macaroni and cheese for a little kick. For a little entertainment in the evening, check out Howl at the Moon, which has dueling pianos, but make a reservation ahead of time. Or feast your eyes on the food and drink at the Drum Room Lounge, a former jazz club in the historic Hilton President Hotel, which has 1920s-style lounges that were once a hot spot for people like Frank Sinatra.
Don’t miss the legendary Arthur Bryant’s barbeque, which is the best outside of Texas. Arthur Bryant was considered the king of ribs. Order your meat by the pound and don’t forget the cole slaw, baked beans, and potato salad.
The Power & Light District has a wide range of sports saloons, night clubs, lounges, pubs, bars, and beer gardens. Don’t forget about the outdoor spaces at Kansas City Live! where good food, drinks, and music light up the city. Perfect places to grab a drink, share knowledge, and just have a good time with peers and colleagues.
Straddle the Past, Present, and Future
The city may be a hub for two sports teams, NASCAR races, jazz, and, of course, some of the best barbeque in the United States, but did you know that it straddles two states (Missouri, where SHARE is being held, and Kansas) and is a hub for quirky museums, modern street art, and American history? Many of these sights are a free streetcar ride away.
In the historic Jazz District between 18th and Vine, view eye-catching murals and historic landmarks. The Kansas City Juke House has karaoke, open mic nights, and soul food, and the American Jazz Museum and its Blue Room offer live jazz, as well as artifacts from Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and Charlie Parker.
Take in the history of baseball with the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum located close to where Andrew “Rube” Foster established the Negro National League in 1920.
Jazz legend Thelonious Monk said, “All musicians are subconsciously mathematicians.” Like John Coltrane, who explored the structures of music, technologists similarly explore code and mainframe platform tools to fine-tune and accelerate business processes.
