SHARE: How did you get started in the mainframe/IT industry?
Paul Pilotto (PP): I am a seasoned technologist with a decorated career in the mainframe technology industry. I started my career as a COBOL/CICS/IMS/DB2 programmer and eventually started my own technology services venture in 1995 focused on 4GL programming languages and migrations. I built a successful business and eventually sold it in 2015. I then joined IBM in 2016 as a global solutions architect leader for Z DevOps solutions. In this role, I partnered with Fortune 100 customers and strategic IBM system integrators/business partners on their modernization initiatives leveraging DevOps Tools on System Z. In 2021, I co-founded Graytitude Mainframe Solutions, focused on mainframe DevOps modernization.
SHARE: Can you give a brief overview of your involvement with SHARE?
PP: Even though I just became a full-time member, I’ve been following SHARE for quite some time. I’ve attended several SHARE events and found them to be very valuable, both from mainframe domain knowledge and a networking perspective. It’s always great to learn and share experiences at the conference with other experts. I have been fortunate to be part of several panel discussions where I was able to share my real-world experience with mainframe DevOps and modernization.
SHARE: What made you want to speak at SHARE Washington, D.C.?
PP: SHARE epitomizes the vitality of the mainframe community. It is a key vehicle to grow and nourish mainframe knowledge as a new generation of talent is onboarded. I am eager to share my expertise with the wider mainframe community.
SHARE: What can attendees look forward to during your session?
PP: We are bringing together the best of technologies like generative AI and traditional mainframe development. Given the focus on mainframe modernization, we will demonstrate the art of the possible and paint a vision of the mainframe development paradigm over the next decade.
SHARE: What is something about your topic people are surprised to learn about?
PP: This is not your run-of-the-mill session. We bring a disruptive approach to the topic by illustrating how generative AI and automation is game changing in concert with traditional impact analysis.
SHARE: Why should others speak at SHARE or attend SHARE events?
PP: SHARE is the premier conference for the technical mainframe community. The agenda is diverse and provides a rich variety of perspectives. It is imperative for industry and academia alike to actively contribute and participate given the criticality of the mainframe across global enterprises.
