SHARE in Boston Preview
With SHARE in Boston less than two months away, I wanted to give you a preview of some of the great MVS Program content that you’ll be seeing there.
In the EWCP project, (Enterprise-Wide Capacity and Performance), Glenn Anderson will be giving The World of z/OS Dispatching on the zEC12 Processor presentation.
Kathy Walsh will be talking about Configuring LPARs for Performance and Horst Sinram will fill us in on 2.1 with Workload Management Update for z/OS 2.1 and 1.13
In the MVSS (MVS Storage Management) project, Barbara McDonald will start things off with DFSMS Latest and Greatest and that looks to have a great amount of 2.1 content. MVSS will also have plenty of more detailed sessions on 2.1 updates like RLS for Catalogs and PDSE. In addition to IBM presentations, there are plenty of vendor sessions from CA, Hitachi, Oracle. Some other sessions that jumped out at me: The Economics of Storage Tiering, The Catalog Search Interface, and Using PDSEs in your SYSPLEX: Best Practices and Troubleshooting.
MVSE, aka MVS Core Technologies, has John Eells presenting What's New in z/OS 2.1 - Beantown Edition for a great intro to all the new and updated 2.1 functions. The lovely and talented Marna Walle will then present her two part migration sessions: Migrating to z/OS 2.1: Part 1 of 2 There are also 2.1 update sessions for JES2 and JES3, Parallel Sysplex, z/OSMF and Unix Systems Services, and even a few more! Lest it all be about software, we have sessions on the hardware too: Harv Emery telling us about the zEC12 in zEC12 Hardware: Processor, Memory and System Structure and Elpida Tzortzatos talking about zFlash in zFlash Introduction, Uses and Benefits
User experiences are a signature session type at SHARE and this SHARE is no different. MVSE has User Sessions on z/OS 2.1, zEC12, SMF Logstream mode, CA Chorus System Manager (MSM), and Bob Rogers talking about eliminating custom exits.
Not to be outdone, EWCP has Meral Temal doing Hints And Tips of Data Set I/O Performance.
Labs are a great way to learn and get hands-on experience. The MVS Program has labs in zPCR, ISPF, SDSF, CA MSM, Health Checker, RMM/HSM Report Generator, z/OSMF, and RMF XML Reports!
There are Intro Sessions, Advanced Technical Sessions, Q&A Sessions, Keynotes, Roundtables, Best Practices, and Diagnostics, oh my! It’s actually starting to make me exhausted. :)
Of course, there are plenty of great sessions outside of the MVS Program: CICS, zNEXTGEN, z/VM Linux, Security and Comm Server. Database, WAS. I really don’t know how they do it all! Oh wait, yes I do…it’s volunteers!! Let’s hear it for all the planning and scheduling volunteers! Thank You!
Personally, I really think this will be the best SHARE I’ve ever been to. Maybe it’s because of the two year z/OS release cycle, which ‘saves up’ two years of updates and new function, and it’s being jam packed into one SHARE! Maybe it’s because I know I’ll get a great lobster. Maybe I just need to get away from work for a week…who knows.
